The work is based on the premise of using massive stone as a building material. The site is located in the very center of Locarno, directly adjacent to the Rotonda designed by Aurelio Galfetti. The purpose of the project quickly came into view; a Film Academy carrying the dynamism of the Film Festival throughout the year.
The above document presents the level analysis of the site and the play of interrelations between the old city the new city, pedestrian and motored flows, and between the Festival Cinema and the prospective Cinema Academy.
Because each cut of the extracted block of stone is spending energy. The structure is composed of the maximum block only cut once in the middle.
This creates a space where dimensions between elements are constant, allowing for the modularity of closing elements.
Model-making was an essential tool of research. Quarries from the Region kindly provided the stones to compose the final model.
