Integrated Digital Fabrication

This project explored the potential of double-curvature structures, utilizing wicker strands as a natural material to create a pavilion of no straight lines. We were able to take advantage of the material’s bending capacities to introduce tension and rigidity to the structure. Through a combination of physical experiments and digital implementation, we were able to produce construction documents that simplified the assembly process. The resulting spaceframe was surprisingly light and rigid, with each part equilibrating with the whole in unison. This project demonstrated the potential of double-curvature, and how data manipulation can be used to create nonstandard structural patterns.
